There have been many highlights over 2018/9. Here are just a few.

A Great Year for Drama

This year our world-class entertainment programme has included the return of the Royal Shakespeare Company with the much-loved Romeo and Juliet. We also enjoyed the National Theatre's production of Macbeth  as well as a number of other well received shows including Sherlock Holmes: The Final Curtain, The Kite Runner and Rebus: Long Shadows.

Our Pantomime Spectacular Continues to go from Strength to Strength!

Newcastle Theatre Royal panto legends Danny Adams, Clive Webb and Chris Hayward once again thrilled audiences in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

But it wasn’t just those that visited the theatre that got to enjoy all the fun; once again the cast filmed a special performance which was transmitted for free to bedside Hospedia screens in NHS hospitals across the UK and Northern Ireland so children spending time in hospital over the festive season didn’t have to miss out. Cast members also brought some cheer when they paid their annual visits to the Great North Children’s Hospital and Children’s Heart Unit at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.

This year our resident baddie Steve Arnott celebrated 10 years as our panto villian. And now our panto stars are also TV stars with audience favourites Danny and Mick appearing in their very own CBBC series - called Danny & Mick - beginning its second series in Summer 2019.

Benidorm Live

Once again we were lucky enough to open a brand new show with the world premiere of Benidorm Live in September 2019. Produced by close friend of Newcastle Theatre Royal, Michael Harrison, Benidorm Live reunited on stage many of the favourite characters from the popular TV show and proved to be one of the audience success stories of the year.

Ballet Lorent

In March 2019, we were delighted to welcome locally based Ballet Lorent to our theatre for an original, seductive event like no other.

After Dark saw the audience sit cabaret-style on the Theatre Royal stage as 13 dancers moved amongst them like characters in a dream. This intimate performance over three nights offered a unique viewing journey with the Theatre Royal auditorium as the backdrop.

Accessible Performances

We strive to make our venue as accessible as possible for all our customers and we are extremely proud to be able to offer relaxed performances, audio described, captioned and signed performances for selected productions. As well as the ever-popular relaxed performance of our pantomime, we have been able to offer accessible performances across the programme including The Kite Runner, Love From a Stranger, An Officer and a Gentleman, Jersey Boys, Northern Ballet's The Three Musketeers and Kinky Boots as well as across our Opera North seasons.
