I am delighted to have been appointed as Chair of the Theatre Royal Board of Trustees; it is a great honour and I would like to express my sincere thanks to my predecessor Bill Midgley OBE for his hard work, dedication and distinguished service over many years.

Our venues remained at the forefront for providing quality arts and culture in the region and once again we have presented a broad range of high calibre productions with something to appeal to everyone. Audiences have enjoyed the very best in touring drama, musicals, opera, comedy, music, dance and ballet and our spectacular pantomime has again proved to be a massive hit!

The huge efforts and commitment displayed by each and every one of the hard-working members of staff throughout the Theatre Royal has again been recognised with the team triumphing against strong competition to retain the title of the North East’s Most Welcoming Theatre at the UK Theatre Awards. A richly deserved award and one which reflects the positive feedback shared by our loyal customers on a daily basis.

The year has not been without its challenges, yet we remain buoyant - despite times of economic and political uncertainty – and continue to attract audiences well above the national average.

As well as offering my heartfelt thanks to all the staff, Philip and my colleagues on the Board of Trustees, I would like to extend my gratitude for the continued support from our Friends, sponsors and donors whose generous contributions have helped to ensure that this wonderful institution remains at the forefront for providing quality arts and culture in the region.
